How important is scientific literacy and how does that work in a world of experts?

Everyone should understand the basics of how science works - how a claim is tested and what constitutes evidence. This will keep them from being scammed in the future - by, say, people selling plastic bracelets claiming to 'increase your energy and balance', people selling fake cancer cures, people claiming to be psychics, people selling horoscopes, and much, much more. A basic understanding of how the world actually works and how claims are tested would save the country many billions of dollars a year.
