What's it like working with developmentally disabled kids?

I think the most important thing for ANYONE who works with children - special needs or otherwise - is to remember to NEVER tell a parent that their "child will never..." My son, with Autism, has broken through EVERY barrier that the "specialists" have ever told me about my son. "They" told me that my son at 4years old would never...go to school with average children, would never be any more mentally competant than he was right then, etc... If I had listened to them I would have given up on being the parent my son needed. By the way, my son is now 10 years old and will be heading into a "mainstreamed" 5th grade clroom next year and his IQ is WELL above "average". "Specialists" sometimes damn children by telling their parents those no hope that he or she will be any better.
